Some airmen left home knowing they might never return. No. 311 Squadron was their unit.
Formed on 29 July 1940 at RAF Honington, the 311th Czechoslovak Bomber Squadron was the only Czechoslovak bomber unit within the RAF. Its crews flew night raids against industrial centres deep inside Germany — their first attack on Berlin came as early as September 1940. The squadron's losses exceeded fifty per cent, yet it fought on. After transfer to Coastal Command, it patrolled the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay, sinking enemy submarines and escorting Allied convoys. Over five years of operations, the squadron flew more than 3,000 combat sorties. 250 of its members gave their lives.
